Hi guys! I wanted to do an anime review of Snow White with the Red Hair, or Akagami no Shirayukihime. Basically, it's about Shirayuki, a girl with really, really pretty red hair. She's an herbalist who is chosen by Prince Raj to become his concubine. Obviously, she refuses, and retreats to the hidden village of Clarines to seek refuge.
Plot: The main story of this anime is a bit weak, in that Shirayuki's hair attracts many bad things to happen to her. For one, she's almost sold off because of it. Prince Raj wanted to make her his concubine because of her hair color, thinking he could have it as a "trophy." As Shirayuki spends more time in the castle, her relationship with Zen strengthens and she increases her skill as an herbalist. One thing I like about the story is that Shirayuki isn't given special treatment because Zen likes her. In fact, she is harassed many times because she is a commoner.
Characters: The main characters are Zen and Shirayuki, and while their ship is canon, I can't help but ship Shirayuki with Obi. Zen is a prince, and while he has very minor flaws, his overall demeanor is perfect. He seems too flawless and caring to be real. Obi, on the other hand, is a more intriguing character. While he is caring and kind, he is still mysterious. He also had a dark past, working various risky jobs, one of which was to remove Shirayuki from the castle. He's more flawed as well, compared to the nearly picture-perfect Zen. The supporting characters also develop throughout the course of the anime. Kiki and Mitsuhide, the castle guards, are some of the funniest supporting characters I've ever seen. Shirayuki, while a good-natured person, is a bit of a Mary Sue. She's similar to Zen, who is also too perfect. Her red hair, while unusual, is brought out several times in various episodes. Even though red hair is uncommon, the writers use this as a way to attract many enemies against Shirayuki. She's also targeted countless times simply because of her hair. I also wish she would stand up for herself more, and be a stronger female lead.
Art: Snow White with the Red Hair has some of the most beautiful art I've ever seen. Even the individual leaves on trees are specifically animated. It's hard for me to describe what the art is truly like. The characters are very detailed.
Music: The soundtrack for this anime was not too outstanding, but the music wasn't necessarily bad. I enjoyed the ending song for the second season, but other than that nothing really stood out to me.
Conclusion: Snow White with the Red Hair is not a flawless anime, but while it does have an average plot and music, its art and supporting characters are wonderful.
Thanks for reading!
